The Dojo Code is the code of conduct under which the Art of Goju Ryu Karate-Do in practiced.
The Goju Ryu Karate emphasises the character building aspects of Karate in which respect for the Dojo, instructors and fellow students is an essential principle.
The ultimate aim of the Art of Goju Ryu lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants through hard training, sincerity, effort, etiquette and self control:
Character – Exert oneself in the perfection of character | |

Etiquette – Be respectful and courteous | |
Self-Control – Refrain from impetuous and violent behaviour |
RESPECT: | All senior karate-ka, the Sensei and the Yudansha (Black Belts) must be shown respect and be called by their respective titles by all junior grades. | |
POSITIVE ATTITUDE: | Always attend class with a positive attitude. Karate is very repetitive, but one can always learn something new each lesson! | |
CO-OPERATION: | Aid your progress by always co-operating with your instructor and fellow students by helping them generously and offering advice if you spot errors in technique or manners, while also accepting their advice and assistance in a positive manner – be careful not be a “know all”. | |
LEARNING: | Listen to your instructor while he is pointing out areas for improvement and always ask questions when you are not sure, but not every other minute. | |
COURTEOUSY: | Always be courteous and friendly towards the instructor and your fellow students. | |
MANNERISM: | Always sit with crossed legs in the dojo while your instructor is explaining something and you have to sit down. Refrain from loud talking; it can interfere with the running of the class. | |
PUNCTUALITY: | Always arrive on time for class. If, due to circumstances beyond your control you are late, excuse yourself as you enter the Dojo. | |
FEES: | Pay your fees promptly to enable the instructor to meet his overheads. Remember when your annual licence expires and renew it promptly. | |
NEATNESS: | Always train with a clean Gi and see that your body is clean as well. See that your nails and toenails are kept short and clean and always remove all jewellery before class. | |
MEDITATION: | Classes begin and end with a short meditation in the “seiza” or seated position. The object is to relax and clear the mind to improve reflexes and to review and absorb your training | |
 PHYSICAL CONDITION | Everyone knows his own physical condition. If you feel you cannot cope, slow down or move to the back of the class and rest until you can continue. If you have any injury, please inform the instructor before/after the class. |
The study of karate can be rewarding for children. It teaches physical and mental control. The benefits of physical development are increased flexibility, coordination and muscle tone. The mental development is shown in increased concentration and self-control. By self-control, we mean that the child learns how to prevent emotions from taking over in difficult situations.
With time parents will notice an improvement in their child’s. Their ability to Focus Attention, Self Confidence, Self-Control and positive thinking will become more apparent. Listening skills, Discipline, Respect and Good Manners will develop with regular practice.
The core of Goju Ryu Karate stresses the vital importance of a healthy mind and body necessary to lead a productive life, lighting against child obesity and avoiding children to wonder about or sit in front of a console for hours.
Academy for Karate Goju-Ryu (AKG) children’s program is open to children 6 to 15 years old. This style of karate emphasizes self-discipline and self-control and helps develop confidence, coordination and strength. In beginners classes children learn basic karate techniques: punching, striking, blocking, kicking, shifting and take-downs. Regular classes focus on application, work with partner and Kata (forms).
 The Children’s Program also offers the opportunity to test for grading under the Syllabus of the Academy for Karate Goju-Ryu (AKG), once affiliated.
Sensei Hernâni Gabriel is a 5th degree black belt and teaches the Children’s Program. Sensei Gabriel has studied karate since 1979 and has over 30 years of teaching experience in several countries with both adults and children. He has started the children’s program in 1998.
When taken in the correct amounts these foods will provide all the vitamins and minerals your child needs for good health and therefore supplements should generally not be necessary. Additionally vitamins and minerals obtained by food are more effective than those obtained from supplements.
They are source of complex carbohydrate, fibre, B vitamins. They may also provide calcium, iron, copper & Vitamin E.
Foods in this group include pasta, rice, bread, breakfast cereals, pitta bread, scones, chapattis, rolls, crispbreads and potatoes (including sweet potatoes).
His/her diet should include 4 to 6 portions of these foods per day. A portion would be an egg sized potato, 2 tablespoons of cooked rice/pasta/noodles or 3 tablespoons of breakfast cereals.
The foods in this group are a source of protein, Iron, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, copper, magnesium, selenium, omega 3 fats and Vitamin D.
These foods include fish, meat, poultry, offal, seeds, nuts, textured vegetable protein (such as Quorn), tofu (soya curd) and other beans and lentils.
Your diet should include two portions per day. A portion would be 4 oz of lean red meat or poultry, 6 oz of white fish, 2 oz of oily fish or 3 tablespoons of beans or pulses.
Foods in this group are a source of calcium, protein, zinc, vitamins B2 & B12 and fat soluble vitamins A and D in the full cream versions.
These foods include milk, yoghurt, cheese, fromage frais and crème fraiche.
Your diet should include 2 to 3 portions per day. A portion would be 1/3 (200 mls) of a pint of milk, 150 g pot of yoghurt and 1oz (25g) of hard cheese such as cheddar.
The foods in this group are a source of Vitamin C, Fibre (particularly soluble fibre), potassium and various antioxidants. The antioxidants help to prevent some of the damage caused by fats in the diets.
Foods in this group are all fruit and vegetables including fresh, frozen, dried, canned and juiced varieties.
Your diet should include 5 portions per day. A portion would be equivalent to an apple, a banana, two plums or a glass of fruit juice.
Sugary foods and fatty foods are a concentrated source of energy (calories). The fatty foods will provide a source of fat soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids, however these would be obtained in sufficient amounts from other items in alternative food groups.
Foods in this group include honey, butter, margarine, cooking fats and oils, crisps, chocolate, sweets, honey, biscuits, cakes, fizzy drinks, fried foods and pastry.
These foods should make up less than 1/12 of your total intake.
